A VPS is a slice of a shared physical machine; a dedicated server is the whole machine for you alone. A VPS is cheaper and flexible and covers most sites and apps; a dedicated server is for heavy, steady or compliance-sensitive workloads.
What a VPS is
A VPS (virtual private server) gives you guaranteed CPU, RAM and storage on a shared physical host, isolated from neighbours. You get root access and can scale resources up easily. It's the sweet spot for most websites, stores and small apps.
What a dedicated server is
A dedicated server is an entire physical machine reserved for you. Maximum and fully predictable performance, no neighbours, and full hardware control — at a higher price and with less instant flexibility to resize.
Side by side
| VPS | Dedicated | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Performance | Strong, shared host | Maximum, isolated |
| Scaling | Quick to resize | Hardware change |
| Best for | Most sites & apps | Heavy / steady load |
How not to overpay
Start with a VPS unless you know you need a dedicated machine. Most projects never outgrow a well-sized VPS, and you can scale it as you grow. Move to dedicated when you hit consistent heavy load, need full hardware control, or have strict isolation requirements.
